In this video from 1 November 2020, distinguished Autralian lawyer Mark Leibler AC discusses Justice in the Face of Prejudice with the previous chair of the CCJVIC, Philip Bliss OAM, in a presentation on Zoom by CCJVIC.
Mark Leibler AC is senior partner at Arnold Bloch Leibler and head of the firm’s renowned taxation practice. For more than 40 years, Mark has acted for many of Australia’s largest businesses and corporate leaders, and is recognised as one of the country’s preeminent tax lawyers.
Michael Gawenda’s recently released biography of Mark, The Powerbroker, describes how Mark’s leadership in the law has interconnected with his leadership of the Australian Jewish community, where he has headed up both Australian and international Jewish bodies. He is National Chairman of the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council, Life Chairman of the United Israel Appeal of Australia, and Governor of the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel, and as a Governor of Tel Aviv University.
Mark’s determination to use the law as an instrument of social justice is also demonstrated by his profound contribution to Indigenous rights and reconciliation. He has served as co-chair of Reconciliation Australia and, more recently, co-chaired both the Expert Panel and the Referendum Council on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Australians.
Dr Philip Bliss OAM has dedicated his life to intra- and interfaith cooperation. A recently retired successful dentist, he is currently Treasurer of the Australian Council of Christians and Jews, and President of Progressive Judaism Victoria. He is also an honorary life member of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. During Mark Leibler’s leadership of the Zionist Federation of Australia, Philip was President of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, and later became Chair of the Council of Christians and Jews (Vic).
